The Bangalore Moving Guide

Most of what goes wrong on moving day in Bangalore is not the packing. It is a lift that was not booked, a truck that could not turn into the lane, or a quote that was never itemised. This is what we have learned running moves across the city, written so you can use it whether or not you book us.

1. What actually decides your moving cost

Floor area is the wrong unit. Two 2BHKs can differ by half again in cost. What moves the number:

• Volume. The cubic space your goods take decides the vehicle and how many trips. A sparsely furnished 3BHK can be cheaper than a full 2BHK.
• Floor and lift. Third floor with no service lift is the single biggest hidden cost in Bangalore. Every carry adds crew time.
• Vehicle reach. If a truck cannot get to the door you need a shuttle load, which is effectively a second move over the last hundred metres.
• Packing scope. Full packing costs more than transport-only, but it is also where breakage risk drops most.
• Distance and traffic window. Cross-city moves that cannot avoid the Outer Ring Road at peak hours take longer, and time is cost.

Ask for the quote itemised. If a mover will only give you one number, you cannot tell what you are being charged for or drop what you do not need.

2. Society permissions: the step people forget

Most gated communities and apartment blocks in Bangalore have rules that are not obvious until the day:

• A written move-in or move-out intimation to the association office, often two to seven days ahead.
• A service-lift booking with a fixed time slot, and sometimes a refundable deposit.
• Permitted hours: many societies do not allow moves before 8 am, after 6 or 7 pm, or on certain festival days.
• Gate passes for the crew, and a vehicle entry pass with the registration number.
• A no-dues certificate from the association before you are allowed to move out.

Do this first, before you fix a date with a mover. A confirmed lift slot is what makes the rest of the plan real.

3. Timing your move around Bangalore traffic

Traffic is not a detail here, it is a scheduling constraint:

• Avoid 8:30 to 11:00 am and 5:00 to 9:00 pm on the Outer Ring Road, Whitefield Main Road, Sarjapur Road, Bannerghatta Road and Hosur Road.
• Start early. Packing from 7 or 8 am means the loaded vehicle leaves before the morning peak sets in.
• Weekends are easier on the road and usually easier for the service lift, which is why they book out first.
• Month-end is the busiest period for every mover in the city, because rental agreements turn over. Book earlier or move mid-month if you can.
• Monsoon from June to September means covered loading and extra wrapping for anything absorbent.

4. A packing order that works

1. Two weeks out: sort and discard. You pay to move everything, including what you will throw away at the other end.
2. One week out: pack what you do not use daily - books, decor, spare linen, off-season clothes. Label by destination room, not by contents.
3. Three days out: defrost and dry the fridge, drain the washing machine, and photograph the back of your TV and router so you can reconnect them.
4. The day before: pack a first-night box that travels with you - chargers, medicines, a change of clothes, basic tools, toilet paper, tea and a kettle.
5. Moving day: keep documents, jewellery, laptops and keys with you, never in the truck.

5. How to vet a mover before you pay anything

• Insist on a survey. A price quoted over the phone without seeing your goods is a guess.
• Get the quote in writing, itemised, with taxes and extras visible.
• Ask whether the crew is the company's own or subcontracted, and get a name and number for the day.
• Ask what transit insurance covers and what it excludes, and whether it is optional.
• Check the address and phone number resolve to a real business, not just a listing.
• Be wary of anyone asking for most of the payment in advance.

6. Things specific to Bangalore that catch people out

• Narrow older lanes. Indiranagar cross roads, the older Banashankari stages and inner Vijayanagar often cannot take a full-size truck. Plan the shuttle in advance.
• Buildings without lifts. Large parts of Rajajinagar, Malleshwaram and the older JP Nagar phases are walk-ups. Wardrobes and double beds usually need dismantling.
• Metro and road works. Corridors around Kadugodi, Hope Farm and the Purple Line change month to month. Check access the week of the move, not a month before.
• Industrial areas have their own rules. Peenya and Jalahalli units have gate timings, security clearance and documentation requirements.
• Airport-belt distances. Devanahalli, Bagalur and Chikkajala are 30 to 40 km from the city centre. That is a genuine half-day of driving each way in traffic.
